According to Canadian Cancer Society, in 2021, suicide rates for teens and young adults increased by fifteen percent over 2021. Suicide rates for adults also rose by fifteen percent during that time. These alarming statistics catalogue the growing issue of substance use disorders among youth. As a result, substance abuse prevention programs are now required by health authorities in many countries.
One of the key indicators of a mental illness is depression. Depression affects an estimated 50 million adults in North America alone, according to Suicidal Symptoms Among Adults, a recent study published by the National Institute of Mental Health. Adults are more likely to experience depression if they are aged 15 and above, according to Suicidal Symptoms Among Adults. About one-third of depressed adults are aged 15 years and older. However, mental illness can begin before the individual reaches the age of 15 years old.
The increasing number of people who suffer from mental illnesses is not a new phenomenon. There have been increasing trends in this disorder among various age groups, particularly amongst the general population. It is expected that this trend will continue in the future as mental health becomes an important concern among society.
An added reason for the high demand for mental health and addiction treatment centers is the fact that the aging population requires more attention from medical professionals. According to the World Health Organization, the proportion of adults suffering from mental health and addictions has been rising steadily since the mid-1990s.
